: I'm Eighteen and I'm Old
on Sunday, February 19 @ 18:12:31 UTC
jhkl writes:: " I’m old and
I’m eighteen.

I’ve had my big fling,
Tried my childhood dreams
Of doing something great
But alas no more.
I’m in university really to
Get a degree for that good job.
To toil and work without
The satisfaction of realizing
Old decrepit dreams.

A childhood dotted with
Overwhelming ambitions;
This is what I’ll be,
I used to say.
But it just won’t happen.

My parents have some gray hair
They’re getting ready to retire
Energy’s drained each day
From their old decrepit bones.
Pills and doctors in their lives
Every day; God’s aging delayed.

The pets are all grown up
They’re aging into their teens
Entering into the final stretch
Of those last heartfelt years.
Soon I will be mourning their
Loss – their departure from this
Cruel, calloused world.

That childhood faith, naïve thoughts;
Those far-off ideals of some world
In which a difference can be made.
In time, my old goals will be
Replaced by the lure of the dollar
And the rock solid family nest.
Then my child will have dreams
As well.

And in time, the cycle will repeat.

I’m eighteen and I’m old. "

I am going to sound like an old codger. I know this and am going to continue anyway. I was 18 years old, once upon a time. At that time I thought I was giving up on all of my dreams by going to business school and not following my dream to be an actor. Well, business school fell through as well, and other things have transpired that weren’t as planned. But, all things considered I wouldn’t change a thing. The poem inspired by the fear of lost youth was well written. But the fears that brought it into life are unfounded. Enjoy what you have while you have it. Don’t worry about the future, it is the one thing you can count on happening and you really have little control over what transpires.

James

this sounds like me at eighteen...i have now had three years to mull all of that over, and though i made some different choices (i too went to school for business) i am still going after my dreams. i just found a way to implement what i was given to do towards my dreams.

this poem is very well-written, but i must say: don't give up on your dreams. use whatever you have to strive toward them. you really can do anything you set your mind toward; you just have to keep that up and not give up on yourself.
