: Ghoulish Nightmare
on Sunday, March 04 @ 13:37:04 UTC
liampoet writes:: " As I lay alone in restless bed
Sleep, a stranger this night cold
Feelings hound like weary dread
Foreboding filches fretful hold

Limbs keep numb as though quite dead
Beads cascade from creasing brow
Cry aloud, though lips won't heed
Frightful menace in mind does grow

From corners dark, a piercing howl
Strikes morbid fear through hapless bone
Shapes reveal a ghastly ghoul
Presence turns heart to stone

Why visit he this forlorn room?
What purpose this, his form so foul?
Is this his haunt, or lair or tomb?
Does he yearn to take my soul?

Speak, oh ghoul, speak out plain
Spare me further wretched wait
Show me cause this angst, this pain
Let me know my lot, my fate.

Slowly, shape approached my side
Creepily gliding to the fore
Tapering form adrift astride
My body frozen to the core

Eyes, wide open, see again
Phantom’s vile tormented guise
Hideous look of deep disdain
All at once I recognize

Inherent in his feature chill
All mankind’s woeful misdeeds made
Sins, wrongs, transgressions all,
Borne witness to in this façade

Placed upon this earthly sphere
When life first created be
Charged in keeping man's soul clear
Of deviant ways; failed miserably.

Then cast from Light's eternal grace
Specter's strife - to self redeem
In warning wayward hearts; embrace
Righteous way to life Supreme.

Fear no longer grips me now
Soothe takes hold, my flesh at ease
As phantom ebbs in noiseless flow
Its presence gone, am calmed, at peace.

Reality dawns in new day born
A dream perhaps I feel, no more
Sure ‘tis man's way to treat with scorn
Such nonsense, drivel. Shall I ignore?
