in wet grass.
In the homes of ministers,
chubby wives feed
on television
sitcoms, morbid pink angels,
lemons and an urge
to see Jesus
in their bubbling, late night
comedy
routines. Bibles thumbed
and fingered
like
high school girls. Strong perfume
make-up faces blushing
red headed like
flames became a reason not to enjoy sex, but
wash it down, instead,
with cheap blackberry brandy.
Call it sacred. Immediate.
I never know what I'm talking about.
Let it be explained
somewhere else.
An innerstate. A blockade
of inmates.
Sun shadows leaving the golden dust
of parched wheat
next to mile markers at
every exit.
A memory. Ghettos boiling.
Large, over-turned
vehicles
haunting
the only way out.
