: Father
on Wednesday, September 14 @ 08:19:00 UTC
towenstark writes:: " Curious child
Peering from the bedroom door
Half open
Standing in the dark I watched him
He sat in his easy chair
Right elbow propped
Cigarette placed between index and middle finger
Light from the tv flickering off the walls
Smoke snaking its way to the ceiling
My Father, in his 60's then
Lost in the vapid juvenality of Hee Haw
My Father, whose poetry I had discovered
Tucked away
Out of sight
Out of mind
The little black book where he kept his soul
Waiting, if he ever decided to find himself again
Or perhaps to just remind himself

In the early stages of altheimers
I saw him cry for the first time
Wondering aloud; why, after struggling
For so many years
He was rewarded with a failing mind
And the loss of a friend
A friend left behind in a black book
A friend I never knew "

That's a fantastic poem. You've got great imagery and a really great sublime emotional arc. I'm going to look for more of your writing on the site.

This is very good! You put it very eloquently. My grandmother is in the late stages of Alzheimer's and it is very hard to watch a once proud women revert back to child like behaviors.
Great write and keep it up!

I felt I was watching this from afar. This made me feel many different emotions, and will stay with me a long time. You certainly capture the reader.

Like the previous comments,

this is a fantastic poem.

My grandmother passed away from alzheimers,
It never got so bad as to where she couldn't eat or speak- and with all her memory problems, she never forgot our names; amazing.

It was as though she couldn't make new memories; she could recall past events, although with much struggle, sometimes she would watch a loop of a vcr, and she'd never know she had seen it before.
